Add Pronto peer performance data to my Internet Marketing Report

Every month when reviewing the data on my Internet Marketing Report, I can't help wondering, how is my web site doing in comparison to Pronto's best and worst performing web sites? For instance, in the categories: Total page views, Average pages per visit, Average bounce rate, and Avergae time on site, the data that is presented on my site has no actionable relevance without peer data.

In other words, is 1,000 Total page views a month an average performance, or bellow average or a poor performance?  Without peer performance data I simply have a number to compare month-over-month.  If, on the other hand, the report also included peer data; I learned that my site gets 1,000 views a month, but Pronto has some sites getting 10,000 views a month, I could determine that I have some marketing work to do.  Its just a thought; I believe adding some baseline performance data would help me better understand how my site is performing relative to other industry related sites and help me zoom in on the areas of opportunity.

Thank you,

Hi David,

Great idea! We have tons of valuable traffic data at our finger tips and indeed, it would be quite useful to have a benchmark for comparison. We've spent some time looking into exporting this data from Google Analytics. Unfortunately, it hasn't been easy to find a solution that fits our needs.

However, with a bit of manual work, Google Analytics does allow us to pull some basic information from all sites. It doesn't give us the full picture (for example, pageviews and pages/visit are inaccessible on an account-wide level), but hopefully, it will be enough to give you an idea of where your site stands. Here are our averages as of last month:

Average Visits - 374
Average Time on Site - 2:00
Average Bounce Rate - 56%

Keep in mind that are many factors involved in a website's traffic data. Being above or below these averages isn't necessarily a good or bad thing. All sites function and are used by visitors in a different way which can lead to deviations from the norm. If you have any specific concerns about your site's performance, feel free to send us a ticket at support@prontomarketing.com.

Hope this helps for now. We'll keep you posted on any further developments regarding exporting of more detailed data from Google Analytics.

Best,
Tim

Tim this is great information!  While somewhat limited, is it possible to provide this in the blog, on a web posting, or even in the monthly reports?  The stats you provided are apparently for April 2011 and it would be helpful to have current information to benchmark our web site performance, or even just a note that these measurements have not significantly changed.  Should additional measurements become available due to improvements in Google Analytics, that too would be welcome!

Hi Ed,

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Here are the average stats for March 2012:

  • Visits - 329.18
  • Bounce Rate - 54.85%
  • Time on Site - 2:03
  • Pages/Visit - 2.42
You'll notice that there's been a significant drop in the average number of visits since I last posted stats in May 2011. This is mostly to do with the fact that stats from last May were pretty inaccurate. At that point, we were basically grabbing any information we could get from Google Analytics and throwing it together.

Since then, we've gained access to a tool that allows us to export more accurate data from Google Analytics and play around with it in Excel. The numbers presented in this post are far more accurate and reliable.

It can be helpful to use this data as a benchmark for your site, and maybe we start sharing this information in a blog post on an annual or bi-annual basis. But I'd like to stress that the best indicator of performance is comparing your own site against itself - looking for growth across several months of data or comparing data from one report against the same timeframe of the previous year.

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!
