We have been trying to make clients/prospects look forward to receiving the newsletter. We have found one of the most popular and clicked articles we add are the fun ones. We try to tie it someway to computer stuff but it is more to get them to open the newsletter and even better... forward it.
Some things we have added or are planning to add:
- Trivia Questions - Computer related trivia. i.e. what movie is this quote from ..... (Matrix quote, Lawn Mower Man, HAL on space odessey, etc...)
- What is your computer IQ? Questions to score how much they know but easy/fun: i.e. which of the following (A, B, C or D) best describes "The Cloud"
- Cool Computer Shortcuts and Tips: i.e. Crtl-A selects everything on a list
- Fun and helpful top utilities and websites: i.e See if you are on a spam list www.mxtoolbox.com
We find the fun and intriguing articles get read a lot more and those are the ones we get the most feedback on. Ideally, add a sentence that if you found this fun and helpful, forward to a colleague/friend!

Great idea, Alan.
We can crowdsource this, collecting ideas from interested partners, as well as Pronto research.
Question - Are you thinking that you require the customer to click a link and find the answer on your website or give them the answer at the end of the newsletter?
Thanks, Barb
Thanks!
We did both but I like the idea that they have to click a link to see the rest of the article and/or the answers. That also allows us to track article popularity on the monthly report. I know the softer/fun articles are often our most popular. Don't get me wrong, I want the newsletters to be powerful and cover advanced topics like security, industry changes, warnings, etc but Pronto has nailed that. Want the newsletters to be longer but sounds like a lot more great content on the way. So my only remaining goal is to get people to forward it to others and to look forward to it. Thus the fun part.
I am hoping to find time to do an article on cool, fun and free utilties this month. Stuff like the build in tracert command or the better but have to download it free PingPlotter so people can see how their data travels over the internet. Some clients get a kick out of stuff like that. Have lots of utilities we use and like that are oddly fun!

I'll leave this topic open and invite anyone who would like to share fun free tools to post.
One that I like is colorcop (colorcop.net) for duplicating rgb and hex color codes.
Good one. Thanks!
We did some research once on what people click on and Alan's right in terms of the lighter side. I remember at that time there was one article about keyboards and germs and that was one of the top clicks.
